NZ Photo Hotspots - Mt Cook/Lake Pukaki - Part 2

The west is best - well not necessarily...

Visiting photographers should remember that the lake has three easily accessible shorelines - east west and southern.

western shore

SH 80 to Mt Cook Village runs up the western shore and is consequently the most photographed side of the lake.Peter's lookout (map) is the most popular viewpoint on the highway to Mt Cook village and for good reason, but we recommend stretching your legs and looking about, as there are many other juicy options on the western shore.

Mt Cook from the Peter's Lookout - I don't know Peter from Adam, but I like his outlook on life!

eastern shore

We find the eastern (Tekapo side) shore of lake pukaki very rewarding to shoot especially in Autumn and it offers some wonderful camping sites to boot. Don't let the gravel road deter you, as yoiu don't have to go far to find photos like this waiting for you.....

southern shore

The southern shore (SH 8) offers some classic lake & Mt Cook views - we like it at dusk as the contrast is lowered and nice pastel tones come out to play.  Sunsets can be spectacular under a Nor' west arch.
