We've been looking at places that we want to revisit in the near future for more photography. Let's face it, as a landscape photographer, the revisit list is almost every place you've been.....except perhaps Port Waikato....but the weather might have been the overriding factor in my impression of that place.
Wharariki Beach over in Golden Bay, however, is well up the list. Not only for the exceptional photographic opportunities it offers, but also as a great family destination.
We took a chance on a fairly dodgy looking weather report back in August as we were all the way up in Nelson and we had always wanted to visit. We swung our way over the Takaka Hill in our motorhome and out to Wharariki Beach about an hour's drive from Takaka in Golden Bay.
There's great accomodation available at Wharariki Beach Holiday Park complete with a menagarie of birds - the kids especially liked the peacocks! And the camp is just down the road from the 30 minute walk over Puponga Farm Park out to spectacular Wharariki Beach . The impressive (and much photographed) Archway islands look great anytime of day but most are most photogenic at low tide - dawn or dusk. Here's where the weather didn't play it's part as we had just one night there and it rained all afternoon and evening - which didn't bother Jack and Indi who had a ball running around in the rain getting as wet as possible!
The following day the weather cleared mid-morning so we walked out to the beach, stopping to look at the baby seals - which were playing in the river and will come up to the edge to say hello if you sit and wait. Once you hit the beach there are big islands to look at, big sandhills to run down, tunnels to walk through (low tide), rock pools to look at - a great adventure for all the family : )
Wharariki Beach.....we're coming back soon....

Warning: Feed the peacocks away from your front door - those things poop big!!
Get some sand in your undies! The sandhills are big!
