Today's Picture of Beautiful New Zealand | Mount Egmont / Taranaki

Mount Egmont, sunset, Waiiti Beach, Taranaki, NZ I was so fascinated with photographing the rock formations at Waiiti Beach that I nearly missed this stunning twilight view of of Mount Taranaki. Photography by: Sarah Sisson. Image Gallery: Taranaki Camera: NIKON D800 Lens: 70.0-200.0 mm f/4.0 Shooting Data: f/22, 0.6sec, ISO 64
Everytime Mount Egmont / Taranaki emerges from it's resident blanket of cloud I find myself wondering if I am staring at a leftover set from the the filming of The Desolation of Smaug. Egmont's looming, symmetrical form seems too phantasmagorically good to be true - it almost looks manmade...
I can confirm that Mt Taranaki is not constructed of foam, chicken wire and CGI magic - I have walked part way up it's flanks and the rocks were rocky and the mud was, well, muddy.
That's New Zealand for you though - just a little too good to be true.
Cheers - Todd
Here's a little bit of Hobbity, flame-throwing Dragon nerdiness to liven up your Thursday - this movie actually looks pretty good (let's see if it runs to 4 hours though...)
